TRAVEL TIPS · MONEY

How much money do you need in Kenya?

Less than you might fear, more than you might hope — it really depends on how you travel. As a rough guide, the rate is around KES 129 to US$1 (mid-2026), so check the live rate before you fly. Here’s what your dollars actually buy on the ground.

Is $20 a lot in Kenya?

It’s a decent amount for a day of simple eating and getting around — about KES 2,600. That covers a good local lunch plus a couple of rides across Nairobi, or several street-food meals.

What it won’t cover is a sit-down dinner for two at a tourist-oriented restaurant. Think of it as a comfortable “out and about” budget, not a night-out budget.

How far will $100 go in Kenya?

About KES 12,900 — roughly a full, comfortable day in Nairobi on a mid-range budget, not counting your hotel. If you’re travelling on a budget, it can stretch to a few days of food and transport.

It isn’t enough for a day of safari, though: park fees plus a vehicle and guide add up quickly, so budget for those separately.

Is $50 a lot of money in Kenya?

Yes, for everyday spending — around KES 6,450 will comfortably cover a day of local meals, cafés and rides around Nairobi. It’s a little tighter if you want a nice restaurant dinner and drinks, and it won’t touch safari costs.

What do everyday things cost?

Here are some approximate 2026 Nairobi prices, so you can get a feel for things before you land. Prices are usually a bit higher in malls and tourist areas, and lower upcountry.

Cards, cash or M-Pesa?

A mix of all three works best. Cards are accepted in malls, hotels and most restaurants in Nairobi, and ATMs are common in cities — but carry some cash for markets, tips and smaller towns.

M-Pesa is how Kenya pays for almost everything, from taxis to roadside fruit. As a visitor you can register a local Safaricom SIM with your passport and use M-Pesa too.
