Kenya plug type and what to wear
Two of the questions friends always ask before they visit: will my charger work, and what should I actually wear? Here are the straight answers.
What plug does Kenya use?
Kenya uses Type G — the same three rectangular pins as the UK — at 240V and 50Hz. If you’re coming from the US, you’ll need a Type G adapter.
Most phone and laptop chargers handle 240V happily, but check the label on hair dryers and straighteners before plugging them in. And bring a power bank: short power outages do happen.
What travel adapter do I need for Kenya?
A Type G adapter — a UK adapter works. If you’re travelling from the UK, you don’t need one at all. A universal adapter with USB ports is a handy choice if Kenya is one stop on a longer trip.
What is the dress code for tourists in Kenya?
Relaxed, with a bit of thought for where you are. Nairobi is casual-smart — jeans and a nice top will take you most places.
At the coast, especially Mombasa Old Town and Lamu, dress more modestly away from the beach, with shoulders and knees covered. Swimwear is for the beach and the pool.
Can I wear red in Kenya?
Yes. Red is everywhere in Kenya, including the Maasai shúkà, and there’s no rule against wearing it.
What colours not to wear on safari?
Stick to neutral khaki, beige, olive and brown. Avoid dark blue and black, which attract tsetse flies in some parks, and bright white, which shows dust and stands out.
Leave camouflage clothing at home: in Kenya it’s associated with the military.
Can I wear jeans or sneakers on safari?
Yes, both are fine. Jeans work for game drives but are slow to dry, and comfortable closed sneakers are all you need since you’re mostly in the vehicle.
What not to pack
- Plastic carrier bags — Kenya bans them.
- Camouflage clothing.
- Too many heavy items if you’re taking small safari planes: soft bags with a weight limit around 15kg are common, so check with your operator.
